FAULT STATE examines the moment at which a technological object, having lost its operational legitimacy, is preserved through formal restraint and reassigned as a site of imposed meaning.

The object is no longer asked to function. Its prior utility has been terminated deliberately and without compensation.

Fixed to a small white field by fine copper wire, the system is prevented from returning to circulation. It is not repaired, restored or commemorated. It is held in a condition in which its loss of purpose can no longer be mistaken for temporary failure.

What remains is not the residue of usefulness, but the persistence of an unresolved state.

02

POST-OPERATIONALISM

Post-Operationalism begins where function ceases to provide an adequate explanation for the continued existence of an object.

Industrial objects are ordinarily understood through use: they perform, degrade, fail and are replaced. Their value is contingent on operation. Once that operation ends, the object is expected to disappear into repair, storage, recycling or waste.

FAULT STATE refuses that sequence. The failed system is removed from the economy of correction and placed instead within the economy of attention. Its failure is neither solved nor hidden. It is formalised.

The transition is irreversible. Technical inadequacy becomes institutional permanence. Dysfunction is no longer a problem affecting the work; dysfunction is the condition under which the work exists.

Its failure is its final operational state.

03

Aurel Veyr rejects the contemporary tendency to position personality above artistic substance. The work is intended to exist independently of the individual responsible for its creation.

The identity of Aurel Veyr is therefore not disclosed.
